on usf's pcn

(this might be a little offensive)

i'm not even gonna pretend like i liked it..
if you're from usf's pcn and you ask me what i thought.. i'll prolly say "it was chill" or something meaningless like that..

where shall we start??..
the acting was pretty good i guess.. the characters played weren't too difficult.. a pilipino male just graduated from college.. a bunch of his pilipino friends.. a couple of pilipino parents, aunts and uncles.. you know.. the works..

the story was semi-already seen it, semi-this is saying nothing new or insightful about our culture.. it's a love story. the guy isn't pilipino enough, and the girl is hecka filipino.. which isn't really defined anywhere in the story.. i mean she doesn't even speak a dialect.. so exactly what is pilipino enough.. the guy says that being pilipino is having a really big family, i think.. which makes no sense at all..

don't get me wrong.. there is a BIG difference between knowing a lot about your country and culture and not knowing anything at all.. iono if we're gonna label that "being filipino enough", but whatever, just like my skit(i mean the one i'm in, which OWEN J*V*LL*N* wrote) says.. your culture and race are a very important part of who you are..

anyways.. back the sf pcn.. yea.. being pilipino was never defined, like seriously..

and most of the dances were horrendous!!.. oh my lord, i don't think anybody was paying attention in practice, or anybody was actually watching the practices, cuz you sure as hell wouldn't be able to say, yea.. that looks stage ready... i mean.. even if you aren't gonna put something in the skit worth paying attention to, then you should at least make your dances clean.. but shit.. that didn't even happen.. at some point when i was watching the dances, i was saying to myself "i can't believe i paid to watch this"..

a side note.. to anybody reading this saying to themselves "well at least our pcn has really clean dances".. don't think that that saves your pcn.. it still might as well be called "pilipino dance showcase"...

which brings me to the point of all this ranting..
i really feel that pcn is a chance for pilipino college(and some high school) students to spark change or, at the very least, dialogue about their culture.. but from what i've seen, skits have only been a venue for our own inside jokes about ourselves, or a venue where we can poke fun at our own culture.. and dances have been stuck in most random places.. which makes no sense at all..

which brings us to the "what do we do about this atrocity, josh??" question of the night..
(i hope i don't jinx it by saying this but..)
our pcn is gonna be THE SHIT!!... so watch it..

You should take into account that they're a smaller school, smaller Pilipino population, etc.

Their costumes rocked, as well as their dance formations. And their energy.

I just don't think you should make it seem like it was entirely bad. I think if someone wrote about Berkeley like this, you'd be offended at all the hard work you put into your PCN. Yeah, there were some faulty errors, but do we really have a right to criticize other schools' PCNs? When we haven't even showed ours yet, and when we really haven't witnessed other PCNs to compare it to?

you right.
(man i hate it when i get pwned by you like that.. makes me hella cry)

looking back on my writing, it's all pretty raw emotion. and i know that i just used their pcn to take out some frustrations i've felt over almost every other pcn i've seen, berkeley included. and in that sense, it was wrong for me to do that.

hmm.. i never did give credit to their super small cast and devotion to their show, where people were doing like 4 or 5 different things.. and to their energy, like you mentioned.. and for that, i do apologize on my half-done criticism..

i WAS, however, trying to use their pcn as an example of pilipino college students, and not just usf college students, but a lot of pilipino college students not taking advantage of a very good opportunity to make some serious statements about themselves.. i personally think that pcn is one of the most powerful vehicles that college students can have, where we can convey something meaningful and motivating to our audience.. and i feel like we always fall way too short when trying to do that..

oh yea.. and usf doesn't call it a pcn.. they call it a barrio fiesta.. and when they call it that.. it becomes longer than ours..
what's up with that??..

okay.
1. pwned = owned, kat!
2. yes, i remember going to usf's pcn last year and feeling a little bit the same way...one thing my brother said about it is that they looked like they were having a lot of fun - hopefully that was true this year too.

and i agree - in fighting for pcn we always talk about how it is the best way or a creative vehicle for a community to put out a message, and we try. sometimes we succeed. other times not so much. because honestly, doing that and still keeping people entertained is HARD! it's important and i don't think people realize it enough...

but we do always have fun. at least usf met us there hah :D
